The Sector at a glance

The first Cygnus welded with Friction Stir Welding has already successfully accomplished its mission: it was 2018.

FSW has indeed made it possible to develop downsized service modules to be launched by carrier rockets with a limited payload capacity, to weld cylindrical bodies, pressurised elements and large tanks with better mechanical properties and reduced weight compared to conventional welding.

Furthermore, the lower amount of energy required compared to fusion welding and the faster execution times compared to conventional processes make the aerospace sector increasingly competitive.

The Roscosmos space agency and Thales Alenia Space, the largest satellite manufacturing company, are just some of the customers to whom we have already supplied large plants with a high degree of complexity and customisation – designed and developed on the customer’s needs, capable of producing pressurised containers from aluminium semi-finished parts, which are assembled, welded and tested on the machine.
